Vasectomy
A vasectomy is
a procedure in which the vas deferens (the tube that carries sperm from the scrotum to the urethra) from each testicle is
sealed. This prevents the release of sperm during ejaculation. A vasectomy is 99.85% effective as a method of
birth control, a one-time cost that is often covered by insurance, and should be considered permanent.
The procedure
performed by Dr. McLaws is a "No-Scalpel Vasectomy." This is a technique that uses a small clamp instead of
a scalpel to introduce a small opening through the skin to gain access to the vas deferens. The benefits of this type
of procedure include less bleeding, smaller opening in the skin, and fewer complications. This particular procedure
takes up to 60 minutes. Afterwards, you may have some pain and swelling for several days. Unless your work is
strenuous, you may return to work in 1-2 days. Avoid heavy lifting for 1 week.
